IPL TREATMENT AT A GLANCE
WHAT IT DOES: An IPL treatment delivers a broad spectrum of light, which may be adjusted to particular wavelengths, into the layers of the skin. The Intense pulsed light is absorbed by chromophores, or areas of concentrated pigment, where it creates a thermal injury, either breaking up the deposited pigment or cauterizing capillaries. Delivered to the deeper layers of the skin, this thermal heat causes the contraction of collagen fibers and stimulates new collagen growth that may persist for up to 6 months after an IPL treatment.
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW: Intense pulsed light is quite effective in improving the appearance of UV-induced aging. However, some visible spots on the skin could be signs of abnormal cell growth under the skin. It is extremely important to choose the right practitioner when considering an IPL treatment, because, while intense pulsed light can mask the important visible signs of this health risk, it does not affect abnormal cell growth occurring under the skin, and could put the patient at increased risk for more advanced stages of possible cancerous or precancerous lesions.

Injectable Hyaluronic Acid Filler
Hyaluronic acid filler mimics the role of hyaluronic acid, which is a naturally occurring substance in the skin, playing a major role in maintaining skin hydration and volume. Collagenase Clostridium Histolyticum-Aaes
When used as a collagenase injection for cellulite dimples on the buttocks, collagenase clostridium histolyticum damages the peptide bonds in collagen, breaking it down while helping to make new collagen. The fibrous bands thought to create the dimpling effect of cellulite are rich in collagen type I and III and are particularly susceptible to degradation by collagenase clostridium histolyticum.

Radio frequency is a form of energy transmitted via electromagnetic waves creating friction that becomes heat. Ultrasonic Spatula
An ultrasonic skin scrubber is a water-based exfoliation method. It works by delivering ultrasonic sound waves at a frequency generally between 28,000 and 30,000 vibrations per second to loosen and draw out excess dead skin cells and debris, collecting the material on the metal head of the face spatula as it glides over the skin. When the surface of the skin is wet during a treatment with an ultrasonic skin scrubber the water molecules become pulverized, creating a soft peeling effect on the skin.
NON-ABLATIVE LASER RESURFACING
The non ablative laser improves the appearance of multiple unwanted skin conditions by delivering a controlled thermal injury into the deeper layers of the skin without physically harming the epidermis. In addition to destroying targeted tissues, the non ablative laser also stimulates new collagen production resulting in a thickened dermis with improved texture and appearance of the skin.
BLUE LIGHT THERAPY
Blue light therapy involves the use of light emitting diodes (LED) in the visible blue light spectrum (400nm-450nm) to non-invasively influence certain behaviors in the skin as well as aid in the destruction of problematic overgrowth of P. acnes bacteria, a key player in many acneic conditions. Combining blue light therapy with red LED light is a popular light therapy for acne and studies suggest this light therapy for acne combo may help regulate sebum production.
ABLATIVE LASER
An ablative laser functions via an intense heat to vaporize or “ablate” skin cells. During an ablative laser resurfacing, an intense beam of light energy is directed at the specific target on the skin. The laser beam destroys the epidermis or outer layer of the skin while heating the underlying tissue to a temperature capable of denaturing existing collagen and stimulating new collagen production which will develop over time (commonly up to 6 months post-procedure). The result is improved appearance, tone and texture of the skin.
BROAD BAND LIGHT THERAPY
Broad Band Light® therapy is a form of intense pulsed light using two flashlamps to deliver a broad spectrum of light energy into targeted layers of the skin. The focused pulses of light are absorbed by chromophores, or small pockets of pigment or color, in the skin. The absorbed light is then transformed into heat, damaging the chromophore as well as contracting collagen fibers and stimulating collagen production.
ERBIUM LASER
Erbium laser is an example of a solid-state laser. As the light from an erbium laser hits the skin it is absorbed by water inside the skin cells resulting in their destruction. The heat generated in the area surrounding the target tissue results in shrinkage, or “tightening” of existing collagen strands while also stimulating the formation of new collagen. Erbium laser is more active on the upper layers of the skin and cannot penetrate to the depths of a gas state laser, such as CO2 lasers.

PHOTODYNAMIC THERAPY
All forms of photodynamic therapy result in chemical sensitivity to light for the first 48-72 hours. All forms of natural light should be avoided and the use of a minimum 30 SPF sunscreen is recommended even if staying indoors. In general, a burning or stinging at the site of the PDT treatment is common for 24-48 hours with redness and/or swelling lasting up to a week. Scaling and peeling of the skin is common for 4-6 weeks as the damaged skin is replaced by new tissue.
RED LIGHT THERAPY
During a red light therapy treatment, the skin is exposed to a lamp, device or laser-like red light. The light is absorbed by the mitochondria in the cells, enhancing the consumption of oxygen and increasing the level of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), a cell’s primary form of energy. This photobiomodulation energy is used by the cells to build new proteins such as collagen and elastin and to assist the process of cellular regeneration.
